Position: VP of Finance
Location: Remote (U.S.-based)
Schedule: Full-time
Compensation: $200,000 – $225,000 base, plus $25,000 – $50,000 variable
Job Summary:
This is a senior, strategic leadership role for a finance executive who has helped a startup through a step-change in growth and wants to do it again across several companies at once. The VP of Finance will lead strategic finance for a portfolio of venture-backed technology companies on behalf of a NOW CFO client, a strategic finance firm that partners with founders from pre-revenue through Series C and beyond. Working closely with the firm's Managing Partner, you'll own the models, unit economics, and fundraising strategy for each client, guide founders through their biggest growth decisions, and help grow the firm through new client relationships. If you've been a first finance hire or a VP of Finance inside a fast-scaling company, think like an operator, use AI as a core part of how you work, and genuinely enjoy advising multiple clients, this role is built for you.
Responsibilities
Strategic Finance Leadership
- Serve as the senior finance executive for multiple client companies, setting financial strategy and owning the plan for each
- Build and own operating models, forecasts, budgets, headcount plans, and cash runway analysis that leadership relies on to make decisions
- Lead unit economics, pricing strategy, and gross margin analysis to help clients improve growth efficiency
- Establish planning rhythms such as annual budgets, OKRs, and weekly KPI reviews that keep leadership teams aligned
- Oversee the accounting and reporting work delivered by the firm's controllers and accountants, ensuring it supports sound strategic decisions
Fundraising, Board & Investor Relations
- Lead clients through Series A through Series C raises, from investor-ready models and pitch materials to financial diligence and closing
- Own board decks, investor updates, and KPI reporting that tell a clear, credible story about the business
- Represent clients in conversations with boards, investors, and lenders
AI-Driven Finance
- Use AI tools such as Claude as a core part of financial modeling, scenario analysis, and reporting
- Review and QA AI-generated work with a critical eye, catching errors before they reach a client or investor
- Build dashboards and analysis with modern tools (such as SQL and BI platforms) and help the firm refine AI-driven methods across engagements
Firm Growth & Client Development
- Partner with the Managing Partner on new business opportunities, including prospect meetings, engagement scoping, and proposals
- Apply and help evolve the firm's methods, playbooks, and client approach
- Build lasting, trusted relationships with founders that lead to long-term engagements and referrals
Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive finance experience, including a VP of Finance, Head of Finance, or CFO-level role (including interim CFO) at a venture-backed company
- Direct experience leading finance at a startup between Series A and Series C, ideally as an early or first finance hire through a period of rapid growth
- Background in SaaS, technology, consumer subscription, AI-integrated companies, or health tech; hardware companies with a strong software or data component (such as connected devices or wearables) are a great fit
- Deep strength in financial modeling, unit economics, pricing, forecasting, and fundraising, with a strategic finance orientation rather than a primarily accounting focus
- Experience participating in board meetings and leading financial diligence for capital raises
- AI-native working style, with demonstrated use of tools like Claude for modeling and analysis, and experience at companies where AI or data is built into the core product
- Operator mindset, with a track record of leading cross-functional initiatives that improved growth or margins
- Executive presence and the ability to communicate complex financial outcomes clearly to founders, boards, and investors
- Consistent track record of meaningful tenure, with clear context for any shorter roles
Preferred Qualifications
- Consulting, advisory, or fractional finance experience, including managing several client engagements at once, and a genuine enjoyment of client-facing work
- Experience at a strategic or outsourced finance firm, with a strong understanding of engagement delivery
- Experience building and leading finance teams across FP&A, accounting, and business systems
- Experience with M&A integration, ERP or planning system implementations, or IPO readiness
- Foundational experience in corporate FP&A at a large technology company
- Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business, Economics, or a related field; MBA a plus
